When it comes to statement brand activities there’s something very impressive about owning a hot air balloon team. This weekend I attended the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, an annual world-class ballooning festival at Ashton Court, overlooking the city. With over 135 balloon teams in attendance, it was a breath taking afternoon.

Following some aerial acrobatics from the Breitling Wingwalkers, the crowd was treated to a mass ascent from around 100 balloons. Standout teams included the bespoke shape of Disney’s entry with their ‘Up’ balloon, the William Hill Scottish Cup entry with their giant trophy and The Financial Times entry – a new ‘Tablet newspaper’ the size of a tennis court. Other impactful forms included a ‘Minion’ from ‘Despicable Me’ and a super sized Panasonic battery.

In terms of traditional shapes, the Champagne Taittinger and Fortnam & Maison balloons were impressive, both in graphic treatment and use of brand colours. Both these balloons felt like classics and were strongly on brand.

I look forward to an opportunity to help a client create a stand out balloon for their brand one day soon.
